How to spot employee burnout

Burnout has become a problem in the workplace, especially during slow economic times when employees may be expected to take on additional responsibilities.

Employees that have burned out will no longer feel motivated to accomplish the work they have been tasked with. An unmotivated staff is harmful to the company’s bottom line, and it is in the best interest of the company to take steps to help these employees become more engaged and productive.

According to the 2013 State of the American Workplace Report by Gallup, only 30 percent of American employees feel engaged during their time at work. A lack of interest and engagement could be a sign that an employee is feeling burned out, and HR and management should take steps to identify and correct these issues.

What are some of other signs of employee burnout?

If their performance has been slipping, it could be a sign of a problem. One way to look at this is to measure their current performance against how they have performed in the past.

How’s their attitude? When an employee shows signs of being overly stressed and agitated it could be a sign that they are not happy with their job. Additionally, showing up late and leaving early on a regular basis could be an indication of a lack of motivation.

The key to helping burned out employees get back on track lies in meeting with them to discuss what’s going on. Try to find out what motivated them previously and what changed. This way you will be able to find areas to improve upon and turn the situation around.
