Selecting the proper software for the human resources department at your company can be a daunting task, especially for those who are inexperienced in the selection process. Here are some tips to help you choose the proper system:
- Know Yourself
By that we mean, know how much you’re willing to spend (your budget), and what the primary functions of the system will be. Know which elements are MUST HAVES, and which would be NICE TO HAVES. Create a checklist before you even begin your assessment.
- Solicit Feedback
Ask advice and opinions from employees – especially those who will be utilizing the system day in and day out. You should include as many employees as possible but especially the management team in the HR department.
- Narrow it Down
Do some preliminary research and narrow things down before you even see demos. Do some competitive research, see what other similar companies are using and research what the highly rated systems are.
- Test and Assess
Talk to vendors and send up product demonstrations. Try out the systems and see which check off the most boxes, while also fitting within your desired budget. Play the offers against each other to secure a sweet deal for your company. Ask for feedback again from employees.
- Make a Choice
After utilizing your checklist and scorecard – make a decision. Implement the system and work out any bugs with your QA team.
If this software selection seems like an overwhelming task, consider hiring a consultant to take on the job. They can handle everything from ideation to project management and training, and are completely worth the investment.
