According to a survey, human resource departments are not effectively using their time. More attention is being given to administrative duties, while business strategy is being pushed to the sidelines.
John Boudreau, professor and research director at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business and Center for Effective Organizations, conducted research on where HR managers spend their time. He has interviewed individuals every three years for his “Achieving Excellence in the HR Function” survey, to track the eras of the industry’s evolution.
In Boudreau’s latest findings, human resource managers spend a little more than a quarter of their time – 26.8 percent – acting as a strategic partner for their company. Additionally, just 13.6 percent of their time is spent on maintaining records.
“HR leaders that report spending more time on strategic partnership also report a stronger strategic role, greater functional effectiveness and greater organizational performance,” Boudreau wrote.
Compared to CFOs who were asked the same questions, there were some drastic differences. Just 12.3 percent of company leaders time was spent acting as a strategic partner and 24.9 percent of their workload was used for maintaining records.
